A Scary Moment With My Daughter

by | Nov 28, 2018 | Pixelayn Adventures

As Thanksgiving has come and gone, I have so much to be thankful for in my life.  One experience in particular—related to the health of my daughter—stands out in my mind.

Just last summer, June of 2017, my family took an awesome National Park road trip out west.  It covered thousands of miles, dozens of hours in the minivan, and seven states with my wife and kids (7, 4, 2 at the time).

At the souvenir shop near Devil’s Tower National Monument, my two boys picked out a couple bags of colored rocks.  These are the colored rocks you see at nearly every souvenir shop, and they both “had” to have them.

No big deal, we let them buy the rocks, and we went about the rest of our trip before heading home.

Fast forward a couple months to August of 2017

I was sitting at my kitchen table reading a book when I suddenly heard the sound of someone struggling to breathe and choking.  Immediately, I looked over to my left, and there was my 2-year-old daughter with those dang rocks.

I jumped out of my seat and opened her mouth.  There were multiple rocks in there, so I pulled them out one-by-one as quickly as possible.

But she was still gagging on something.

I looked in her mouth again, and she had a large blue rock lodged all the way back in her throat.

In a panicked moment, I did the opposite of what you’re supposed to do.  (Ok, bear with me here as I get a little graphic). Rather than use the Heimlich maneuver, I stuck my fingers down her throat and somehow managed to get my finger past the rock to yank it out.

A Sense Of Relief

HannahMy daughter finally started crying, and that was the best noise in the world at the moment!  She could finally breathe.

I lifted my daughter into my arms with the biggest sense of relief I can ever remember feeling.

Sure, there’s a lot I learned from that situation.  But, my biggest takeaway is how thankful I was at that moment (and always will be) for the health of my family.

We shouldn’t wait for Thanksgiving each year to be grateful.  This is something we should do on a daily basis.

If you’re like me, I’m sure you have an endless list of things to be grateful for.
