A Success Secret Of One Of The Greatest Ad Men Of All Time

by Jan 27, 2019Productivity

There have been many great advertising minds over the past century.  Many of these individuals have been extremely successful in creating profitable campaigns, largely through their hard work, thorough market research, elite copywriting skills, and creative routines.

One of the greatest of the greats was Eugene Schwartz.  And Schwartz had a very specific routine for getting things done and coming up with his brilliant ideas.  What was his routine?

An Old Zen Master Trick

In order to drive as much productivity and creativity as possible, Schwartz consistently followed a set routine that you can easily copy.

Here’s what he did:

  • Worked in the same place every single day—his home office.
  • Pulled up only the one thing he was going to be working on.
  • Set an old school timer (with a nice loud alarm) for 33 minutes and 33 seconds.
  • He wouldn’t leave his work space during this time period.  He had to stay in his seat, even if he just stared at his screen.
  • When the alarm would sound, he would immediately stop what he was doing (even if he was in the middle of a thought).
  • Then, he’d reset the timer for 5 minutes and 0 seconds and leave his workspace to do anything he wanted, except work.
  • He’d then repeat the process by setting his timer to 33 minutes and 33 seconds again.
  • This process would go on for 3-4 rounds every day.

Don’t Skip The 5-Minute Break!

Schwartz emphasized the importance of the five minute break period because that’s when your active mind is focused on anything else but your work.  He said that “When you’re working, you’re not creating… The brain connects when it plays. When it works, it thinks.” It’s when your active mind is busy that your unconscious mind can deliver your best ideas to you.

Amazingly, Mozart used a similar process to write his music.

The only difference?

Mozart used a cue ball and pool table to tap into his subconscious genius.
