APP SPOTLIGHT: How To Make Fewer Writing Mistakes Online

by | Nov 18, 2018 | App Spotlight, Productivity

We could all use an extra set of eyes to catch unwanted writing mistakes.

We’ve all made them… from emails to blog posts to social media shares, I know I’ve made my fair share of typos.

And, don’t get me wrong, trying to write for perfection is a great way to never publish any content.  But, there are ways a tool can help you write fast and ease your “grammar police” mind.

The Solution

The tool?  Grammarly.

Grammarly offers multiple products, but the product we’re focused on here is the free Google Chrome add-in.  Once you have the add-in installed, you’ll begin to see it in action. As you’re typing online, it will begin to underline (in red) your words to offer up suggestions.

You can see in the image below how Grammarly underlines (in red) anything any words it finds with issues.  This is an example while working on this blog post.

When you hover over the underlined word, it pops up with a suggestion.  In this case, it rightfully suggests “youre” should be “you’re.”

See the image below for a visual.

Grammarly Suggestion

The cool thing is, it’s a passive tool.  This means that you simply need to install the Google Chrome add-in, and it will automatically offer suggestions for you.  You don’t need to manually ask it to check your written work.

The main issue is that this tool—the Google Chrome Add-in—is limited to online typing.  If you’re using Microsoft Outlook on your computer or you’re in Microsoft Word (or another application installed on your computer), then the Chrome add-in isn’t going to help you.

However, Grammarly does offer a Microsoft Office product if you’re interested in checking it out.

I have no affiliation with Grammarly, and the link above is not an affiliate link.  Grammarly is something I’ve been using for a little while now, and it’s something you should give a try.
