Royalty Free Images & Multimedia

Multimedia Downloads

Most businesses are always looking for stock photos, stock videos, stock audio, and other royalty free assets to use for marketing materials and internal documentation.

This can be challenging because you can’t legally search for an image, audio file, or video file on Google, download it, and use it. Most of these files are copyrighted.

If you need royalty free assets from time-to-time, we want to help you with this process. In this article, I’m going to share a few of the more popular sites that you can legally use to download royalty free images and multimedia files.

FREE TO USE

The first list of sites are free to use. This means there is no subscription fee for using the platform.

PEXELS—Pexels (https://pexels.com) is a website that allows you to download and use the images and videos free of charge. Here is what they say in their licensing verbiage:

1) All photos and video on Pexels are free to use.

2) Attribution is not required. Giving credit to the photographer or Pexels is not necessary but always appreciated.

3) You can modify the photos and videos from Pexels. Be creative and edit them as you like.

As you can see from their licensing policy, it’s very open and you’re free to download and use assets as you’d like.

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS—Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org) is a freely usable media file repository that—as of the time I’m writing this—has over 62 million files available. It’s structured very similarly to Wikipedia, and you can search for images, audio files, and videos.

Licensing is different for each asset you download. So, you’ll have to look and see what is necessary for each file. There are three license types:

1) Requires the original creator be attributed.

2) Requires the specific license be identified (i.e. linking to the terms of the license).

3) Requires that if you modify the work, your modifications must also be similarly freely licensed.

Although a little more complicated, there are an endless number of files available to use.

PIXABAY—Pixabay (https://pixabay.com) offers over 1.8 million images and videos.

In fact, many of the assets can be downloaded without creating an account. If you want the highest resolution images or videos, then an account is required to download.

SUBSCRIPTION OPTIONS

This list of sites includes options that require paid subscriptions.

FREEPIK—Freepik (https://freepik.com) offers up both free and premium options. With a paid subscription, you get access to all premium files. In order to get access to around 10 million premium assets, you must pay $11.99/month or $99.00/year. This also gives you unlimited downloads.

ENVATO ELEMENTS—Envato Elements (https://elements.envato.com) is a platform that requires a paid subscription. However, it comes with unlimited downloads of over 50 million digital assets. This includes video, audio, photos, fonts, and more. The cost of Envato Elements is $16.50/month

MELODY LOOPS—Melody Loops (https://melodyloops.com) contains over 15k audio files that can be used for video background music, podcast intros, presentations, games, intros, and other applications. Melody Loops doesn’t have a subscription option, it actually charges per song downloaded. You get discounts on downloads the more credits you buy up front. For example: 3 songs for $29, 5 songs for $44, 10 songs for $79, and 25 songs for $169.

WRAPPING UP

Although there are many free options available, the paid options tend to have more assets available for download, and the assets are of higher quality.
